How to create extra space in your home with a Loft Conversion or a Home Extension

#ProjectHomeExtension

Sometimes, we all need just a little extra space. Converting an attic into a loft, or building an additional area onto your home can be the best solution to create this extra space without having to move.

In this article, we will discuss the benefits of each solution so you can decide which of the two might be the best fit for your home, lifestyle, and family. Let’s jump right into it!

Can a Loft Conversion or Home Extension Add Value to my Home?

A loft conversion or added home extension can most definitely add value to your home. In fact, it can add approximately 20%-25% in value, depending on the style of room you’re adding. If, for example, you’re going from two bedrooms up to three bedrooms, or from three bedrooms up to four bedrooms, you should expect to see this amount of increase on the value of your home. Of course, you do need to ensure you’re following your council guidelines to make sure you stay within the building codes regulation standards, and also ensure that your add-on is well built and looks attractive and comfortable to want to live in. You should also ensure the loft ceiling is high enough to be able to comfortably walk around in. If your loft’s ceiling is less than two meters, it likely won’t be considered a “loft” or “room”, but rather an attic or crawl space; even if you have it nicely decorated.

Can I Build the Home Extension or Converted Loft Myself?

It always depends on your level of expertise, but it would best be advised to contact an expert in the field of home extensions or loft conversions. They can try to work with your specific budget, and they know all the ins and outs of how to correctly build a secure, solid structure. They’ll also know the building regulations to ensure you are following the proper codes. Experts may also be able to offer you some input based on some of their previous designs if you need inspiration, and will overall be able to create a nicely finished conversion or add-on, specific to your liking.

How Much Would a Loft Conversion or Home Extension Cost?

The type of extension or conversion you wish to create can vary greatly. If you are planning a simple loft conversion with a staircase, insulation, some windows, interior lighting, etc., you can expect to spend around £20,000. However, if your conversion is a little more detailed or if you are planning on expanding your home with a home extension, you can generally expect to pay anywhere upwards of £50,000 or more, again, depending on the amount of work being done next. Extra windows, plumbing, heating, more elaborate electric work, and so on, can cost a lot more. However, do keep in mind that with your gorgeous new living space, the value of your home will also dramatically increase.
