How to plan your loft conversion in 4 easy steps

Moving house is one of the most stressful events in anyone’s life. Creating more room by either doing a loft conversion or a ground floor home extension can take away the stress and will definitely save you money too.

If you need more storage space, an extra bedroom/bathroom, a playroom or a home office the loft is often the simplest and least disruptive space to convert, and it’s certainly less expensive and stressful than moving house. Additionally, a loft conversion can increase the value of your home by up to 25%.

But what are the practical considerations you need to keep in mind before starting the work?

  1. Assess your Space

Check your loft to make sure you have enough space for a loft conversion. As a general rule your loft needs to be at least 2.3 metres at the highest point, usually in the centre of the loft area. If you do not have this head height, do not be put off, there may be alternative solutions to gain extra head height into your loft.

  1. Time: How long it will take

In general, a loft conversion can take about 8 weeks. Scaffolding is used for access until the staircase linking the loft to the rest of the house is installed, so no materials should be towed through the house and waste can go directly into a skip outside. The work can be noisy, but it won’t create as much mess as a ground-floor extension.

Thinking of your family plans, discuss with the experts when they come to give you a quote about their availability as well as your plans to work out when will be the best time to start the work, so you can plan accordingly. Budget permitting, you might consider to move out, depending on your circumstances.

  1. Budget for the unexpected

Some companies might have few hidden costs which you want to make sure they are covered in the initial quote so you don’t have any surprises.

With SMA Lofts quote, you don’t have to worry about the extra costs, our team of experts will guide you through the whole process from initial conceptual drawings to the completed build for a fixed price quote, so no hidden costs will occur at the end.

  1. Layout

So what are you going to use the loft for? How is the extra room going to be used? When considering your loft layout, consider where your electrical points and switches will go, where your bed is likely to be positioned, if you have a bedroom in mind and whether you need additional plumbing installed, if you decide to install a bathroom or en-suite shower in your loft at a later date. You may need to consider some practical built in cupboards or wardrobes to accommodate all things you would otherwise have stored in your old loft space. Colour scheme will also help as you will save time and money if you have a clear idea about how you want your space to look and feel.
